She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.”
(Matthew 15:27 ESV)
The Canaanite woman begged Jesus to help her sick daughter. In what seemed kind of odd, Jesus told her “No.” Why? He was sent to save Israel. Upon hearing this, the woman responds with a brilliant reason why Jesus should help her daughter get well. “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
Boom! This is a point we Christians need to remember in all that we say and do. God the Father sent His Son, Jesus, to save His people - not just Israel, but all those who by faith believe in the Triune God, the spiritual Israel that includes us. Jesus didn’t come to save the righteous, but to make us sinners righteous before our Father, who is in heaven. God’s grace is showered upon all people - the rain falls to grow food for the righteous and the unrighteous.
The woman understood the blessings Jesus was bringing to people by healing diseases and preaching the Kingdom of God at hand. She shows us that the faith we have in Him is not just for a select few, but for all people.
Prayer - this weekend’s Collect:
Almighty and everlasting Father, You give Your children many blessings even though we are undeserving. In every trial and temptation grant us steadfast confidence in Your loving-kindness and mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
